Agricultural Research Landscape in Ghana

Ghana, with approximately 14.2 million hectares of agricultural land, is a major agricultural producer in West Africa and a global leader in cocoa production (second largest producer worldwide). The country is renowned for its cocoa, cashew nuts, oil palm, rubber, shea butter, maize, cassava, yams, plantains, rice, sorghum, citrus fruits, pineapples, bananas, and vegetables. Ghana is also a significant producer of gold and petroleum, but agriculture remains the backbone of the economy, employing over 40% of the workforce. Through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Ghana Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR-CRI), Ghana continues to advance agricultural research and innovation with strong emphasis on cocoa improvement, value addition, and food security.

Cocoa Research

Ghana is the world's second-largest cocoa producer, known for high-quality cocoa beans. Research focuses on disease resistance (black pod, swollen shoot), variety improvement, quality enhancement, and sustainable farming practices.

Shea & Cashew Research

Ghana is a major producer of shea nuts and cashew nuts. Research focuses on variety improvement, processing technology, quality enhancement, and value addition for export markets.
